Can We Trust the Bible?

If you have read the last couple of posts you may be asking a different question all together. You may not care about which version of the Bible an individual uses, you may be more interested in knowing can we even trust the Bible?

This is the question someone recently e-mailed and asked me about. Here is the brief reply I sent him. Perhaps as a church in the near future we can take each of these points and elaborate on them:

1. I believe the Bible because of its internal consistency

As I am sure you know the Bible contains 66 books, in two broad sections or Testaments, written over several thousand years by around 40 different authors in three languages and on several continents. Now, I know you have heard that before, but let each of those facts sink in. Then realize the Bible is consistent all the way through. Sometimes we may perceive an inconsistency, but with a little study these are always solved.

2. I believe the Bible because of its prophetical accuracy

Prophetically the Bible has been accurate time and again. Even now we see global events that are spelled out in Scripture.

3. I believe the Bible because of its archeological accuracy

Cities and even entire civilizations in the Old Testament that scientists once laughed at and derided have been discovered through archeology. Do a google search for the Hittites for just once example.

4. I believe the Bible because of its anthropological accuracy

By anthropological I mean by the Bibles description of man, his problems and the solutions. Psychology provides literally hundreds of methods of analyzing and solving man's problems and yet they fail time and again. God's Word offers real and lasting solutions.

5. I believe the Bible because of personal experience

Although subjective in nature I still offer this as an evidence. God's Word has been found true in the experience of not just me, but in the lives of hundreds of thousands down through the ages.

6. I believe the Bible because of its preservation

No other book has been so broadly and consistently attacked, and yet the Bible still stands.

7. I believe the Bible because of its scientific accuracy

Although the Bible is not a scientific book it does have scientific declarations which have been found true. Many times these statements were written many hundreds and even thousands of years before science made the discovery.

8. I believe the Bible because it is 110% better than any of the alternatives

Compared to the Koran or any other writing the Bible is infinitely superior.

These are just the highlights but I think any book that can make such claims and be found true has to be of God. It can be trusted with your eternal destiny.
