The quote on John 3;16 is nowhere emphatic enough and “should” must read ” shall”.
Who goes around these days talking in 16th century language.?
There are some great modern day translations out there

THE MESSAGE
only to mention a few.
Come on into 3 millenium.

Good Morning,
I use the Authorised Version for a variety of reasons. Primarily because of the textual support of the original manuscripts which support the Textus Receptus. I also, use the AV because of the manner of translations, formal equivalency as opposed to dynamic equivalency. If someone wants to write a commentary then great, but they should not write a commentary and call it a translation. Very often dynamic equivalency does little more than interpret rather than translate. Lastly, the words used in the AV may not always be in common usage but overall I believe it is simpler. Where the AV uses one perhaps less known word many new versions use several words which amount to more of a description of the word rather than a translation. Anyway, there are the highlights.
I believe you know exactly what translation is being used. The whole tone of your e-mail was typical of some I have met who grasp at every version that comes along, even those which contradict each other. You asked a question to which you knew the answer and belittled my position, then closed by trying to give a blessing? What is that all about?

Just thought I would share a little about why we use the Bible Version we do. There are those who think we do things at Faith Baptist just because that is the way we have always done it.
However, we fervantly study the Word of God and keep an eye on current trends. Everything we do and everything you see is the result of careful Bible study, cultural considerations and diligent prayer.
You may disagree, but do not think that anything we do is by accident.

ReplyDeleteI appreciate some of your reasoning for sticking to the AV. I agree with the importance of formal equivalence in translation and the superiority of the Byzantine text body.
I do question the wisdom of sticking with 17th century Elizabethan English. We need to be very careful in modern translations, some are very, very poor. But the New King James Version uses the same textual body and same philosophy of translation as the Authorised Version while using updated English.
Would that not be worth a look?
