Another Fad Passes, Sort of

While I am sure this particular fad will not completely disappear I believe it will decline. This fad depends very much on a strong economy because it is almost completely unnecessary. Which fad am I writing about? - Bottled water.

As the economy weakens and people consider more carefully what they spend their money on many are no longer splashing out on bottled water, if you will excuse the pun. Whether they bought the water for fashion or for convenience neither reason suffices any longer to justify the purchase. Here is just one article on this issue: Economy Makes Bottled Water Out, Tap Water In

And it makes sense really, especially here in the United Kingdom. Our tap water is among the best in the world and though the quality may vary depending on where you live it is basically very good. So why, except for fashion or convenience, would you purchase it? The article to which I linked explains that in the US it would take around $6 a day to purchase bottled water but the same amount from the tap would cost about $.15!

Now why, you may ask, am I writing about bottled water? Well, because there are many such fads and fancies in modern churches and the fate of bottled water should serve as a warning to us.

Our worship style, our teachings and goals should not follow the whims of society and the world in general. Many believe that to be relevant you must be constantly changing and morphing to be whatever the world wants. The Bible, I am convinced, is relevant because it is truth and as long as we teach that truth honestly we will be relevant to every society in every age.

This author explains this issue well: Preaching and Postmodernism - Part 1

Perhaps more analogies to truth and consistency could be drawn from bottled water and tap water but we won't go there.

God's Word is unchanging and we do not need to chase the world's changeable definition of relevancy or effectiveness. We need to be consistent to the Word of God. The Spirit of God will take the Word of God and do the work in the heart's of individuals.
